Here’s how to create the perfect skincare routine

Skincare can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here at Skin Things, we’re passionate about helping you feel confident in your skin, in and out of the salon. A healthy skincare routine is the secret to maintaining and promoting clean and glowing skin. Today, we’re taking you through how to create the perfect skincare routine for you.

Why it’s important to have a skincare routine that works for you

Creating a skincare routine that works for you is something that’s so incredibly important to get right. Swapping out products is easy once you’ve got the basics down pat. To ensure your skincare products are effective, they have to be used consistently. Using a nice serum or oil every now and then won’t do a whole lot. If you want to see results implementing a skincare routine gives your skin the best chance at reaping your product's benefits.

How to create the perfect skincare routine for you

Skincare is personal. Depending on your skin type and any underlying skin conditions such as rosacea, acne or eczema, your skincare routine will be completely unique to you. Finding something that works for you can take trial and error and potentially even some help from our team at Skin Things.

To give you an idea of what the perfect skincare routine can look like for you, we’ve put together a basic routine for morning and night. Take whatever you need from the information provided. However, the three most basic elements of a good routine are cleansing, moisturising and using sunscreen. If anything, start with this.

Morning

  • Cleanse

The first step in a great skincare routine is cleansing your skin. Depending on how sensitive your skin is, you may skip this step. For some, morning and night cleansing can dry out their skin. If you fit into this category, then cleanse your skin at night. Again, do what works for you. We recommend using a natural and gentle cleanser to remove excess oil without stripping the skin.

  • Tonic

Next up is using a toner. Our tonics are fantastic for prepping the skin to best absorb its next steps. Additionally, it’s also great for balancing the skin and preventing breakouts.

  • Nourish

If you’re looking for extra nourishment in your routine, this spot here is perfect for any oils or serums. Our Day Repair Oil would fit here beautifully.

  • Moisturise

Once you’ve added your nourishing goodness, you want to lock everything in with a moisturiser. Ideally, you want to find a moisturiser that hydrates the skin. Our Daily Nourish Soothe is filled with macadamia oil, one of our favourite all-rounder skincare ingredients.

  • SPF

Coming to the very end of your morning skincare routine, the last and most important step is SPF. Regardless of the weather outside, using sunscreen is a must to avoid any sun damage and the sun's harmful effects.

Night

Double cleanse

Embracing a nighttime skincare routine is all about embracing that five to ten minutes of filling up your cup and pouring back into yourself.

If you’re the type who wears makeup throughout the day, then a double cleanse is exactly what you need. Even if you don’t wear makeup, a double cleanse effectively removes any dirt, sweat, debris and daily grime.

  • First cleanse

Your first cleanse should ideally be with a cleansing balm or cleansing oil. This is not only a gentle way to remove makeup, but it also nourishes your skin simultaneously. Our Jojoba Cleansing Balm is gentle on the skin and has a simple and effective formula. Rub a pea-sized amount over your face, paying extra delicate detail to the eye area. Add some water to emulsify, and then gently remove with a muslin cloth.

  • Second cleanse

After your first cleanse, it’s time to go in with your regular cleanser. This second cleanse is a deep clean to remove any leftover makeup or grime.

  • Masks and scrubs

To deeply clean the skin, using a mask or a scrub anywhere between one to three times a week will help the skin to regenerate and renew. Depending on your preference, we recommend using a mask, such as our Green Clay Mask or an exfoliating powder, like our Rose Mallow Polish Powder. Our Masks & Scrubs are gentle enough that your skin won't feel tight and stripped after using them.

  • Nourish

Similar to your morning routine, this is where you want to add in any serums and then eye creams. We recommend using one to two pumps of our Night Repair Oil (a salon favourite), closely followed by our Calendula and Rose Eye Cream

  • Moisturise

Taking a moment to yourself for nourishing your skin and your skin, it’s time to end your skincare routine with a moisturiser or night cream. You can absolutely use your moisturiser for this step (psst, 'night cream' is a heavy moisturiser in disguise). We recommend finishing your routine off with a lip balm for added hydration.

Final Thoughts

Your skincare routine is all about you and your skin. It’s more than putting products on your skin; it’s about taking care of yourself and enjoying both morning and night.

If you have any questions about our products or how to create a skincare routine right for you, chat with us.
