What is mineral makeup? And why it’s the kind of makeup that you want on your skin

If you’ve ever been curious about what mineral makeup is, our team here at Skin Things is here to answer all of your questions. With the most recent addition of Eco Minerals and our existing range of Youngblood, our team dived deep into the conversation of what actually is mineral makeup and why we’re such huge fans.

What is mineral makeup?

Mineral makeup is a natural alternative to ‘regular’ makeup. Mineral makeup is filled with natural ingredients that have been drawn from the earth. The main ingredients usually combine zinc oxides, mica and titanium dioxide. These create the base for products, with iron oxides and pigments added to create various shades and colours.

  • Zinc oxide. One of the main ingredients found in almost all mineral makeup, zinc oxide is a mineral powder that helps to keep excess oil from forming on the skin without clogging your pores. Zinc oxide also acts as an antibacterial filter.

  • Mica. An all-rounder ingredient in mineral makeup. It’s commonly found in products with colour and pigment, such as illuminating powders, blush and bronzers

  • Titanium dioxide. Gives your mineral makeup coverage. Although it provides coverage to the skin, as its lightweight, it doesn’t clog pores.

Unlike regular makeup, mineral make is free from harsh chemicals and fillers such as fragrances, preservatives and waxes. These ingredients are what can be the cause of breakouts and skin irritation.

What are the benefits?

The list of benefits of mineral makeup is practically endless. Compared to regular makeup, it’s a clear standout.

  1. Non-comedogenic

Similar to our Nourished Skin range, mineral makeup doesn’t clog your pores. As there is no talc in mineral makeup (an ingredient used in regular makeup to prevent caking or improve the feel of a product), it won't clog your pores.

  2. Contains skincare ingredients

One of the main reasons our team at Skin Things loves mineral makeup is the inclusion of its skin-loving ingredients. Eco Minerals BB Cream is a great example. It’s not only a smooth formula but also filled with ingredients such as niacinamide, squalene and rosewater to maintain hydration and improve overall skin tone.

  3. Anti-inflammatory

To combat free radicals that seem never-ending, mineral makeup acts as a barrier to the skin. In conjunction with all of the skin-loving ingredients, it acts as a shield from negative environmental impacts.

  4. Antimicrobial

The incredible ingredient of zinc oxide pulls its weight here, particularly for those with skin prone to infection. Zinc oxide naturally contains an antibacterial filter. This filter stops any bacteria from being created.

  5. It’s usually a sustainable alternative

Depending on the brand you choose for your mineral makeup, the majority of mineral makeup brands have a vested interest in the environment and, as a result, contribute heavily to creating a positive impact on the environment. Eco Minerals Byron Bay has refillable packaging for its products.

Is mineral makeup right for me?

The only true way to discover if mineral makeup is for you is to test it. If you have naturally sensitive skin, it can be what you’ve been searching for. Similarly, if you have acne-prone skin or rosacea, mineral makeup like Eco Minerals or Youngblood can calm the skin and assist in reducing redness.

However, if you have dry or dehydrated skin, mineral makeup might not work as well for your skin. Here at Skin Things, we understand that each skin type is different and will react differently to each product. Discovering what's right for your skin may take some trial and error.
